With its own hospice, like Beaune, the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation includes many wine-merchants such as Faiveley, Labouré-Roi and produces about 40 excellent first growths. The vineyards, except for Nuits-Saint-Georges which is in Premeaux-Prissey, are spread over a 7-km long strip along the coast and produce very different wines. The appellation produces a majority of red wines, composed mostly of Pinot Noir, and a few remarkable and confidential white wines from Chardonnay vines.
Main grape varieties : Pinot noir for red wines ; chardonnay for white wines.
Soils : Limestone bedrock with aluvium screes and clay-marls in the south.
Style of wines :
Red wines : Intense color, close to purple. Wines from the North, near Vosne, are opulent and fragrant. Those from the south, around Premeaux, are aromatic and robust.
Aromas of red fruits, blackcurrant and liquorice. With age, they develop notes of leather and truffle.
White wines. Golden color. Aromas of brioche and white flowers.
