Despite difficult weather conditions, the 1981 vintage produced a number of successful bottles.
In Bordeaux, torrential rains interrupted harvests which resulted in the lack of concentration of the wines. However, most of the Bordeaux wines are still surprising and delightful with a good texture, a beautiful delicacy and an excellent ageing potential.
In Bourgogne, severe frosts in april and hail storms in late july almost led to a low quality vintage. Therefore, white wines are quite weak and red wines lack character, with a lower ageing potential.
In Champagne, the vintage’s quality is excellent but the quantity is very limited. It is quite rare to find a 1981 Champagne.
No honourable mention in Rhône or Loire. However, Alsace produced a few long-ageing wines, particularly Rieslings.
Preceding the amazing 1982 vintage, 1981 produced some excellent bottles : Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Margaux, Petrus, Climens, Cheval Blanc, Giscours, Yquem or La Mission Haut Brion. These are all special bottles to celebrate your most beautiful events.
