1942 was a small vintage in Bordeaux. Due to the difficult weather conditions, the harvest was quite weak. With a damp weather all year round, the Bordeaux wines were barely above average. The red wines are vigorous and tannic with a strong acidity. The syrpuy wines however are good, distinguished and powerful.
Vallée du Rhône suffered from a few frosts during the winter followed by a strong summer drought but the wines remain excellent, especially the red wines which are quite flavorful.
Bourgogne produced fine and light 1942 wines. Grands Crus and first growth Bourgogne wines are excellent.
Apart from Bordeaux and despite the many constraints, the 1942 vintage was full of surprise and produced delicious wines with great character.
For your most important events or as an anniversary gift, a beautiful 1942 bottle is an excellent idea. Here are some of the best wines from this vintage : Armagnac Lafontan, Château d’Yquem, Château Filhot, Rayne Vigneau and, of course, 1942 Grands Crus and first growth wines.
