Appellation of 1100 ha, from the Condrieu territory in the north to Hermitage in the south, right above Cornac and formerly known as « Vin de Mauve » thanks to the Saint-Joseph hill which is located between Mauve and Tournon. The appellation produces very different wines due to the wide variety of terroirs, always with excellent value for money. The region's domaines, famous for their production within the Cornac, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage AOC, purchase more and more vines in Saint-Joseph, like the famous domaine de Jean Louis Chave, important Hermitage producer.
Main grape varieties : Syrah for red wines ; marsanne and roussane for white wines.
Soils : Granit, sometimes broken down into clay.
Style of wines :
Red wines : Nose of red and black fruits, leaning towards violette with a smokey edge. In the mouth, fresh with fruits and a supple finish on pepper and liquorice.
White wines : Very smooth, particularly when roussane is predominant.
