Château Cheval Blanc is one of the most mythical Bordeaux wines. Ranked First Growth in 1885, it was considered as a prestigious symbol of the Saint-Emilion wines. It is also the most affordable of the « eight great wines » from Bordeaux, a title which is now shared with the extraordinary Château Ausone. With vines located on the edge of the prestigious Pomerol appellation, they benefit from a mixture of gravel, sand and clay on ferrous rock.
Critics accused the property of being Pomerol rather than Saint-Emilion, even though its vines are equal part Cabernet Franc and Merlot which makes it a unique wine, sought-after by wine lovers. Even if the younger Crus are delicious, Cheval Blanc has an extraordinary ageing potential which allows for a very long-keeping wine even long past its peak.
The great wines produced are rich, opulent, exuberant and fruity with a deep ruby color and develop flavors of minerals, exotic spices and black fruits.
Thanks to the excellent work of Jacques Hébrard and Pierre Lurton, Château Cheval Blanc became more consistent and reached new levels in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
