1991 was a modest vintage for Bordeaux wine. Considering the weather conditions, the harvest wasn’t very successful. A historic frost, which reached -9°C, destroyed vines in Pomerol and Saint Emilion. Followed by a storm and double the normal rainfall of an entire month in a day.
As a consequence, grapes matured later than usual and vine blooming occured in july as opposed to mid-may or mid-june.
The poor weather situation produced an unsatisfactory harvest. Pomerol and Saint-Emilion were severely impacted : one was forced to downgrade its wines while the other didn’t quite make it.
Despite the contraints, this vintage surprised us with a few delicious wines. In red especially, Château Latour, Pichon Comtesse and Lynch Bages are very interesting.
The same year, northern Vallée du Rhône produced the best wines of the vintage thanks to Rôtie, Hermitage and Cornas.
Whether you choose a Grand Cru Classé or a first growth wine, offering a beautiful 1991 bottle is a great idea and will delight any wine lover.
