Everywhere in France, 1984 was a weak vintage.
Bordeaux produced tough, acidic and tannic wines for two reasons. First, a late and disrupted blooming season in may. Second, a weather-triggered cyclone named Hortense, which destroyed the vineyard in late september. The cyclone generated heavy and uninterrupted rainfalls, cutting short the hopes of producing excellent wines. Far from being castastrophic, the 1984 Bordeaux vintage is still very limited.
In Bourgogne, vineyards weren’t very lucky either. The flowering proved difficult because of the cold and rain in september, as well as the storms in august, which caused millerandage and chaptalisation.
Same goes for Champagne and Rhône : the 1984 vintage was rather unattractive and weak.
In Sauternes, however, the wines turned out to be light, interesting and quite successful.
If you wish to purchase a 1984 wine, opt for a Cheval Blanc, Haut Brion, Vieux Château Certan or Yquem, which are very suitable for important events.
