Since the terrible 1956 frost, the 1959 vintage is the first excellent vintage and a great success for most french vineyards.
In Bordeaux, red wines are massive, strong, rich and well armed to age nicely. Sauternes wines are perfect and can be preserved for a very long time.
In Bourgogne, the light september rains promoted a high quality and quantity of grapes. Even if Bourgogne white wines are less successful, the Bourgogne red wines remain the best : they are rich, majestic and perfectly well-balanced.
In Champagne, the wine is vigorous and mature with a very good ageing potential. Same goes for Vallée du Rhône which produced powerful and pleasing wines.
Alsace produced an exceptional vintage, as did Loire with its fabulous syrupy wines.
As you can imagine, to get hold of a 1959 bottle is an excellent idea to celebrate a happy event. Here is a selection of the most successful bottles : Château Mouton Rothschild, Coteaux du Layon, Vigne de l’Enfant Jésus, Château Lagune, Château Doisy-Védrines, Château de la Fonvieille and Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin.
