The 1958 vintage did not produce the best wines and champagnes of the decade. However, 1958 remains a good year for Bordeaux.
In Bourgogne, the 1958 vintage was quite weak due to grey mold which damaged most of the vines. Red and white wines are not made for long keeping.
In Bordeaux, with a cold and damp spring as well as a hot and dry summer, it started far from easy. However, the red wines are supple and generous whereas the white Bordeaux are weaker and thus less successful.
In Vallée du Rhône, the production was small and unsatisfactory. The 1958 champagne is not the best either.
In Loire, the Vouvray syrupy wines are good and the Jura yellow wines are very pleasant since they are produced only when the year deserves it.
If you wish to get hold of a 1958 bottle, we recommend these satisfying wines if well preserved : Pessac Léognan, Haut Brion, Château Latour and La Mission Haut Brion. Sauternes wines are interesting to taste thanks to their light and enjoyable constitution.
