1948 was a complicated year for most vineyards due to the weather conditions. 1948 did not produce as well as its elder but still managed to produce some very nice wines.
The year was particularly difficult for the Bordeaux region, affected by the september rain. As a matter of fact, the 1948 red Bordeaux wines are quite weak and the 1948 white Bordeaux suffer from excessive acidity. However, a few somptuous wines from great terroirs were still produced.
In Sauternes, the syrupy wines were very successful though quite different from 1947. Bourgogne produced some very good and solid wines, though somewhat irregular due to a very rainy summer.
In Champagne, 1948 was not spared by the weather : the heavy september rain had serious consequences and most winemakers could not avoid grape rot.
If you have an event or anniversary to celebrate, offering a 1948 bottle is an excellent idea. Opt for a Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Latour or Château d’Yquem.
Grand Cru Classé. Bottled at the Château. Great Bordeaux wine. Rare wine.
