Due to difficult weather conditions, 1938 was a very delicate year for our french vineyards. The 1938 vintage was not as successful as its elder but managed to produce quite a few good wines.
The year was particularly tricky in Bordeaux, with a dry summer and rainy month of september. The 1938 white Bordeaux wines suffer from a very harsh acidity et the 1938 red Bordeaux wines are quite thin. However, some are still fabulous wines from great terroir.
In Sauternes, syrupy wines were a great success, very different from 1937 bottles. Bourgogne also produced very nice Crus. Even if these two regions suffered from winter frosts, the mild spring and summer managed to save their vintage.
In Champagne, the 1938 vintage was not spared by adverse weather conditions : the constant rain was very harmful to the grapes and most winemakers could not prevent rot.
If you have an event or anniversary to celebrate, to offer a beautiful 1938 bottle is an excellent idea. You will be very happy with a Château La Mission Haut-Brion, Château Latour or Château Léoville Las-Cases.
